Believe it or not, the whole debacle with NFL players taking a knee still hasn’t abated. Sure, it has died down somewhat, but people are still discussing it here and there. The latest breakthrough, though, is actually a refreshing and welcome update.
As it turns out, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is set to have his contract extended. Goodell was complacent throughout the whole thing and refused to step in to require players to stand up. His decision to bow down to the social justice rhetoric has pissed off a lot of Americans. Many fans – now ex-fans – are spending their Sunday afternoon tuning in to anything other than football.
It’s not just the viewers that have had enough. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is chiming in as well. He has not exactly made it a secret that he finds Goodell to be a disgrace to the sport.
Jones has been vocal against players taking a knee from the start. In his own words:
“We cannot in the NFL, in any way, give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag, we cannot do that.”
“We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues. But there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag, just so we’re clear.”
Jones has taken the next step to try to salvage the NFL. He is now threatening to sue the league if it extends its contract with Goodell. Now that is one hell of a way to make a statement.
This isn’t just a warning either. It has been reported that Jones has hired New York attorney David Boies, who represented Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election.
It’s nice to know that someone with leverage in the league is putting his foot down in a good way.
Do you agree with Jones that Goodell is absolutely incompetent and must go?
